What I’ve been up to – August

In the community, I have been enjoying continuing to get to know many organizations and groups throughout the ward. My assistant, Charity, and I had a wonderful time attending Family Day at Bethania Personal Care Home; the passion and care of all those who make up the Bethania community is very apparent!

At City Hall, it was an honour to mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion with a flag raising and reception to meet some of the veterans and volunteers who keep Manitoba’s many Legions alive and well. Did you know that the Royal Canadian Legion began right here in Winnipeg?

City Hall hosts many flag raisings, including one for Ecuador’s Independence Day earlier this week. They provide a valuable opportunity to connect with and reflect on our vibrant and multicultural community.

Speaking of multiculturalism, Folklorama is on right now, and it’s been such a joy to attend! A massive thank you to all the incredible volunteers who contribute so much of their time and energy making Folklorama possible.

At council, I was pleased to bring forward a motion to create faster and more effective options for traffic calming. It will be considered by the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works in September.

The Standing Policy Committee on Community Services, which I serve on, has struck a working group to make recommendations related to consumer and professional fireworks in our city, and we recently met with the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service to work on this issue. Fireworks have traditionally played an important role in cultural and community celebrations, but there are also ongoing concerns related to safety and the environment. Many cities across Canada are introducing new rules related to fireworks – if you have thoughts about fireworks in our city, I’d love to hear them!

I also really enjoyed meeting with reps from the University of Manitoba Students Union to learn about their concerns. Thank you, Aiden, Heaven, and Sophie, for the opportunity to talk all things transit, housing, and community safety!
