What I’ve been up to in April

It’s been a very busy month as I continue to build relationships with different departments across the city as well as with residents, schools, and various groups across Elmwood-East Kildonan.

From Ma Mawi and the Khalsa Diwan Society, to the historic Elmwood Cemetery and the Afro-Caribbean Association of Manitoba, we have such incredible organizations in our area and it is a privilege to get to know them and learn about their goals and their needs.

I had the honour of speaking at the Prince Edward Legion’s Vimy Ridge Day memorial event, attending Elmwood Community Resource Centre’s “Still I Rise” event to reflect on the success of their gender-based violence support program, and to help prepare emergency food packs with Second Harvest along with the Chalmers Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation.

Planning for park investments

I’ve really been enjoying working with the Parks department to plan and fund upgrades and improvements at some of our ward’s parks beginning this fall – stay tuned for some official announcements soon!

What would you like to see in our neighbourhood parks? I welcome your ideas and feedback.

Prepping for the Neighbourhood Action Team

With milder weather here, city crews have begun filling potholes, and tree pruning continues in our ward. I have been working with the Neighbourhood Action Team (NAT) program as we prepare for them to do two stints in Elmwood-East Kildonan this summer, tackling things like pothole filling, sidewalk repairs, levelling boulevards, graffiti and bulky waste removal and hazard tree trimming. Basically, when the NAT arrives on a street, they fix everything within scope, whether a 311 request exists or not.

Last year, residents reported being thrilled with the results that NATs made on their street. This year the NAT will be able to fix up even more areas, with the addition of an extra 4-week shift.  The NATs will be working in Elmwood-East Kildonan from May 18 to June 12 and again from August 10 to September 4.

Where are the trouble spots on your street?

As residents, we know our own neighbourhoods best. Is there an uneven sidewalk that needs to be addressed? A pothole that needs filling? A tree whose branches block a stop sign or sidewalk?  Please send in your reports to 311 or to my office so that we get them logged for repair.
