3 reasons to read your water meter

Funny how sometimes those important tasks that take just a moment to complete can easily fall to the bottom of our to-do lists! The City recently posted a really helpful article on why it is so important to send in regular water meter readings.

Here are three key benefits to submitting your water meter reading every three months:

  1. Ensures you only pay for the water you use.
  2. Helps you catch leaks before they become too expensive.
  3. Avoids the need for estimated bills, which can result in a costly surprise later, or the realization that you’ve been overpaying.

I encourage you to read the whole article! It does a great job of describing how residents can help the Water and Waste department function more smoothly, which saves time and money for us all.

Looking ahead, the City will begin installing Smart Meters in early 2027. These meters will send in meter readings automatically, which means you’ll only pay for the water you use. The City estimates that it will take about four years to change out all 223,000 meters across the city – a big job, but it will mean a significant improvement in service, and the era of water meter reading reminder cards will be over!
